A misty start greeted the players as they arrived for their annual Schools' International match, and proceedings were delayed by by approximately 20 minutes before starter and Stoke Rochford Captain Pete Smith was able to get the players on their way.
England were led out in the morning foursomes by Girls Captain Eva Myers and her partner, Emily Dixon, who were soon ahead and stormed to a 7 and 5 victory. They were followed by another dominant performance from Zoe McLean-Tattan and Scarlett Phillips who swept to a 5 and 3 win. A half for Tala Clarke and Mariella Buchanan aided by a brilliant recovery from 190 yards from Mariella Buchanan on the 18th, ensured the girls had got England off to a flyer. The matches were tighter amongst the boys but good wins for Lucas Dennison and Sam Waddington (2 and 1), Aaron Moody and Zach Banks (4 and 2), and Fynn Colley and Kailash Krishnan (2 and 1), countered the excellent Welsh win by Captain William Pontin and his partner Tomos Williams (4 and 3) to give England a commanding 5.5 - 1.5 lead at lunch.
The afternoon singles again saw the girls out first, and also leading the way in their performance, with wins for Zoe, Mariella and Tala before the Welsh hit back with wins for Nel Allen and Rebecca Del Sol Gonzalez. The last girls match ensured England were able to extend their lead with Eva again powering to a 7 and 6 win against Welsh Captain Alicia Kelly, birdieing 5 of the 12 holes played in doing so.
An England win was not yet secure however, and the boys were having to cope with a fightback from their counterparts. Kian Evans, Tomos Williams, Paul Reid, Tom Mclean all played their way to wins for the Welsh but eventually great play from Boys Captain Lucas Dennison, with a 5 and 4 win, Toby Peters (6 and 5), and Aaron Moody (2 and 1) saw England to victory. A battling half from Under 16s Champion Sam Waddington saw England eventually secure a 13-8 win.
Both teams conducted themselves superbly throughout and ensured the match was played in great spirit, as befits Schools' Golf. Stoke Rochford GC proved a great venue and the club were a wonderful host to Schools' Golf, our visit hopefully putting the cap on a memorable Centenary year for the club.
